Fear is very useful to us as humans. It is vital to feeling the response and emotional danger to protect ourselves from legitimate threats. But sometimes, situations that are far from dangerous stop us from experiencing wonderful things such as listening to others.
Useful fear: Self-preservation
Self-preservation wires most of human beings. The flight-and-fight response kicks in when we have the sense of threat to life or anger forcing us to extreme concentrations and shed distractions. Scientific studies reveal that fear allows pushing heavy loads giving us the ‘super-power’ strengths under extreme pressure when it is sometimes worth risking injuries.
Overreaction: Fear out of hand
Too much of fear may pervade your life but at times it may be your friend in the right doses. For example, when the fear is triggered due to any danger, it causes trembling due to any cause, but if it does not subside, it leads to something more pernicious; for instance, anxiety leading to overreaction causing to find fear at every corner. Anxiety holds back many people with fear having to lead to scary decisions. If I am OK as I am, I have managed to know about my disabilities and strengths.
Happy fear: Ingredients
In Fear Is Not an Option, Monica Berg said: ‘If we live a risk-averse existence because of fear, we also live a joy-averse existence.’ Choice and calculative risks that form the happy recipe ingredients of life, is not the trends most of the people follow. Opportunities come our way in the form of a new job, new relationship, or anything one aims to get and achieve; overcoming fear is important that helps us to learn and embracing risk-taking.
The headline at one of the Huffington’s post says: ‘Failure is not the opposite of success but a stepping stone to success.’
Mindset: Perception
Having a positive mindset helps overcome fear. In case of those with fear of flying, helps if people are searching what greets them ahead of the journey. Entirely irrational, that the likelihood of one falling prey into an accident of flight does not decrease if the trip is of a holiday rather than a business trip changing the risk perception changes. People with a positive attitude are more likely to conquer the phobia of public speaking. The same could be said for other fears in life. Those who generally hold a positive view of the world around them have less fear of the potential ‘what ifs’, and are better able to rationalise them in the event of a negative outcome.
Overcoming fear
Analyse, prioritise, uncertainty, and option are the best operations that help you overcome the fear. Former first lady Roosevelt quoted: ‘You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you can’t do.’ So, while you are taking a new job, it’s essential to define the changes in life for better.
