With the shift to online shopping and remote work, more and more people are considering breaking into copywriting. For many, the prospect of working at home and making money doing something they love is highly appealing.

But if you’re cautious about switching careers, you may be wondering if copywriting is the right choice for you. Does it pay well? Is it stable? Is it future-proof?

The answer to all three is a resounding ‘yes’. Copywriting is an excellent career to have right now, but it also has potential to be even more in-demand in the future as more brands launch ecommerce.

Copywriting also has a lower barrier to entry than some other industries, offers work-from-home options, and has minimal requirements.

Sounding too good to be true? There’s only one catch – you have to be good at it.

All businesses need copywriters

No matter what career you’re considering, you’d be wise to check out the job availability. Some jobs require a lot of training or education and have numerous graduates competing for limited spots.

Copywriting is no such job. All businesses need copywriters. Of course, some business owners don’t recognize the value of effective copywriting and think they can do it themselves. That inevitably fails, leading them to seek out professional writing services.

Ultimately, copywriting is what motivates the sale, so businesses of all types need to leverage effective copywriting to keep their business afloat. You can also narrow your focus in specific industries or niches that you know well, so you can write about your passion and seek out the work you enjoy.

Here are some examples of industries you can specialize in:

  • Real estate
  • Technology
  • Travel and leisure
  • Home improvement
  • Insurance
  • Finance
  • Pets
  • Marketing
  • Sports and outdoors
  • Fashion and beauty
  • Automotive
  • B2B

The sky is truly the limit!

There will always be demand

Copywriting is essential to every business, and always has been. As more and more businesses move to ecommerce and more and more people launch their own startups, the demand for copywriters is incredible.

Copywriters have a lot more options than just agencies or in-house marketing teams as well. Now, copywriters can have lucrative careers as freelancers for multiple businesses, multiple industries, or with agencies, ensuring there’s enough work to go around.

Your time is yours

Some copywriters choose to work for a brand or agency and may keep regular, full-time hours, but that’s not the only option. You can work as a freelancer or contractor and choose to work the hours you want, as much as you want or need, as your own boss.

You agree to the rates and project parameters in advance, and you have to manage your time effectively, but you have control over how and when you work. If you like to work at night when the world is quiet, that’s your choice. If you like to work in the morning before the family wakes up, or right after the kids go to school, you can do that. As long as you get your work done, it’s up to you!

Copywriting is future-proof (Well, mostly)

A lot of jobs and industries are worried about their job security as technology, automation, and artificial intelligence experience widespread adoption. Some jobs have already been replaced by computers or robotics, and that’s only ramping up as the technology gets more advanced.

Creative endeavors like business copywriting aren’t as easy to replace. Artificial intelligence programs are being used for writing ads and other copy, but they’re not as effective as a human writer. They can be used to improve writing, but not replace humans completely. The creative process requires creativity – humanity – that technology can’t accomplish.

No one knows what the future holds or how advanced technology will become, but it’s unlikely that copywriting will be performed entirely by technology anytime soon.

Copywriting is complete freedom

If you choose to work remotely as a copywriter, you not only have control over when you work, but where you work.

Is the family taking a big trip to the beach? Imagine writing from your beach condo balcony overlooking the ocean, or in a lounge chair with your toes in the sand.

Better yet, you can plan out your year to leave time and disposal income for a true vacation. Most people are in desperate need of more vacations, but limited time off and budgets prevent them from taking them.

That’s not the case for you! If you invest in your skills and plan accordingly, you can take (almost) as much time off as you wish. If you want to enjoy a month in Europe just for fun, you can.

Also, you have the option for ‘work vacations’. You can travel to some quiet and idyllic location to work on a project or balance your time between activities and sightseeing and your work hours, giving you an opportunity to see more of the world without sacrificing your time or income.

Copywriting is easy to break into

Some careers are challenging to enter. You need special training, education, work experience, and other requirements, meaning that you can’t make a fast switch to the career you want.

Copywriting is easier. You don’t need any special education or licensing – you just have to be good and get your foot in the door. Sure, it takes some work to break into the industry, but not compared to other professions.

You also have more control over your income. Six-figure careers take time, but you can build toward this future on a direct track. You can focus your efforts on high-paying projects and really hustle, or take your time and enjoy more work-life balance.

If you want to be selective about the projects and pay, you can. If you want to spend only part of the year working and the rest enjoying time with family, traveling, or engaging in other creative pursuits, you have that option.

You can do work you love

Doing work you love gets you away from the ‘grind’. With copywriting, you have a diverse range of options for what industries you write for and what you write about. You can choose your clients and ensure you’re aligned with their values and passion.

This not only promotes better work satisfaction, but ensures that you’ll become a better copywriter. If your passion shows through in your work, you’ll inspire more people and deliver better results.
