The Role of Chiropractic Care in Car Accident Recovery

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Despite being fatal and dangerous, car accidents are something we have unfortunately grown used to witnessing or experiencing in our daily lives. Every year, approximately 1.3 million people die in car crashes, and about 20 to 50 million suffer from non-fatal injuries. These non-fatal injuries can often lead to permanent disabilities if not taken care of properly.

If you’ve been in a car accident, your injuries may not be visible, but after a while, you may start feeling pain in different areas of your body, leaving you clueless about what’s happening. That’s why it’s highly advised to contact a chiropractor right after any auto accident, whether you’re visibly hurt or not. A chiropractor is a trained health professional who can treat the nervous system and musculoskeletal disorders. Contacting a chiropractor after car accidents is helpful in many ways:

Pointing out hidden injuries

Some auto accident injuries, like a whiplash injury, aren’t visible. Whiplash is an injury to your neck due to your head being forcibly thrown forward and backward in an accident. The symptoms of whiplash include headache, dizziness, and neck pain which usually appear days after the accident. The best way to treat whiplash is to see a chiropractor early on. They can easily detect the injury as they know all the common areas of pain after an accident.

Non-invasive treatment

In some accidents, surgery is the only treatment option, but there are cases in which other treatment options are viable too. Naturally, people tend to avoid surgery for as long as they can, as the process can be scary. If you delay it long enough, the injury might go beyond repair. If you want to go through alternatives before opting for surgery, chiropractic care is the answer as it is a non-invasive treatment. A chiropractor will help in aligning your spine and bones to allow quicker healing without any surgery.

Scar tissue reduction

Typically, after any car accident, scar tissue develops in the place of torn ligaments and tendons. The development of scar tissue is the body’s natural way of healing, but it’s a slow process, and scar tissues cause stiffness, reducing your motion range. A chiropractor is trained to target those damaged areas and break internal patches of scar tissue. Doing this helps increase the speed of the healing process.

No medication

In car accidents, the injured are often prescribed painkillers for a short time for immediate pain relief. Painkillers, although an integral part of initial treatment, are risky as people are prone to becoming addicted to heavy painkillers. Additionally, some of these medicines may only relieve your symptoms without actually treating the cause of your pain. To avoid this situation, consider opting for chiropractic care. Chiropractors help alleviate your pain purely via therapy and multiple exercises without medication.

No long-term pain

Car accident injuries, though seemingly benign at the moment, can prove very painful in the long run. This happens when you don’t get your injury adequately examined or treated. Often the impact experienced during the accident causes internal damage. One best way to prevent it from turning into long-term pain is to seek a chiropractor. They will ensure all your hidden injuries and pains are treated long before they become a severe problem.

Endnote

With the advent of the industrial revolution, our roads have become crowded with all sorts of vehicles and pedestrians. This jam-packed traffic leads to multiple car accidents happening daily. Under such circumstances, you must be aware of the best decisions to make in case of a car accident injury. To ensure a thorough recovery, you should contact a chiropractor as they are trained specifically for this purpose.
