A Beginner’s Guide to Growing Plants: Where to Start

Most experienced gardeners will tell you that to them, gardening is extremely entertaining, relaxing, and rewarding. Knowing that you’ve grown yourself the food that you are eating is truly something special.

It doesn’t matter whether you are planning on having a vegetable garden, making organic fertiliser, or planting fragrant florals, you will benefit from it in many ways. Now, if you are relatively new to this hobby, it can be a bit confusing at first.

You’re probably not sure where to start. Still, it doesn’t mean that you should, God forbid, give up, or consider it a huge challenge. It’s far from it. Just pay attention to the tips we’re about to give and you’ll do just fine. You can also visit GIY Plants for more tips on growing black currant in pots.

Start from the location

Choosing the right location for your garden is for sure one of the most essential steps. For instance, if you pick a subpar space, it is highly likely you will end up with subpar vegetables. That’s why you should focus on these tips:

  • Sunny spot. Bear in mind that a majority of veggies require from six to eight hours of direct sunlight every single day. Of course, there are some exceptions, such as the leafy ones, that do not need as much.
  • Stable, and not too windy. Do not opt for places that are exposed to powerful winds because they will ruin the young plants, or prevent pollinators from doing their jobs. On the other hand, you shouldn’t choose a spot that floods easily or is exposed to too much foot traffic. Therefore, you should pick a place that seems just about right.
  • Drains properly and doesn’t stay wet. If you’re dealing with poorly drained soil, then you should plant your vegetables in a raised row or raised bed for enhanced drainage. Wet soil usually leads to wet roots which means rotted roots, hence, if you have wobbly soil, till and eliminate the rocks, since they are going to negatively impact root growth.
  • Nutrient-rich soil. Remember that your soil is responsible for feeding your plants, hence if it’s nutrient-poor, you will end up having poor plants that are quite unhealthy.

Consider having full-spectrum LED grow lights

What do they represent? Namely, full spectrum LED grow lights were designed to imitate natural outdoor sunlight that is going to help your plants become healthy as they are supposed to be. More importantly, you will be able to yield better harvests with high-quality and potency of light your plants are accustomed to the sunlight.

Furthermore, these lights can be used all day with little impact on temperature. The use of full-spectrum LED lights allows you to modify the daylight hours, as well as the amount of red wavelength light which will lead to maximising the plant growth rate.

Learn how to plant

Maybe easier said than done, however, if you plant your plants the right way you will make sure they grow and stay healthy for a long period of time. That’s why you should take some time to weed and prepare your soil before you start planting.

Besides that, you should also add fertiliser and mulch where you think it’s necessary. If you’ve never planted before, you can either consult with someone you know who is experienced in that field, or you can find some useful instructions online.

Keep in mind that trees that are planted too deeply will never be able to thrive, and also that root-balls that are placed on the soil surface will dry out in a blink of an eye, which will quickly lead to the death of your plant.

Water, water, water

It is widely known that plants definitely need water. If you’re not too sure about it, just start thinking like one. For instance, on a hot, sunny day, when you come across a breathtaking plant, and you spend quite some time admiring it, what’s one of the first things that cross your mind after a few minutes?

The answer is simple, you are probably too thirsty, and you’re yearning for water. Well, the same goes for plants. All vegetation requires it. Some need smaller amounts, while others are larger, but still, none of them would be able to survive without water.

If you want to water your plants properly, just focus on it, and it is going to tell you exactly when and how much it needs. If it doesn’t look healthy, then immediately water it. If it does, then it’s probably doing OK.

Takeaway

No matter how much you are intimidated by this whole gardening thing, the truth is, it’s definitely not as difficult as it may appear to be, especially if you have proper guidance. Therefore, make sure to follow these guidelines, and you will definitely succeed.
